Matthew Porter and his family have been participating in the OhmConnect program for the past two years - getting paid to use less energy in their home.

But this month, their efforts paid off in an even bigger way when Matthew’s OhmConnect username was chosen as the winner of our latest Prize #OhmHour giveaway - his cell phone bill paid for the year!

“I was pretty excited when I read the email,” he said when we chatted to him this month. “On top of just the environmental impact and money we’re saving, we were glad to hear that what we’re doing worked towards something bigger!”

Matthew lives with his wife and three young children in Carlsbad, San Diego County, and was looking for ways to save a bit of money in his family’s budget when he discovered the OhmConnect program.

“With three kids in three years, we were thinking about ways to save and found you guys online,” he explained. “We started to learn a bit more about energy conservation through #OhmHours and have since switched over the LED lights and smart plugs. We always want to do what we can for the environment but the main reason we signed up was to save some money.”

Conveniently, #OhmHours often happen when Matthew and his wife are putting their kids to bed so they power down their home and read stories in low light, consistently beating their #OhmHour energy saving goals.

Congrats to the Porter family on the big win!

Haven’t heard of OhmConnect yet?

It’s a free service that helps our users use energy when it's cleanest and reward them for saving when it's dirty, during what we call #OhmHours. All PG&E, SCE, and SDG&E customers are eligible.

Wondering what an #OhmHour is all about? It goes a little something like this:

  • Users receive a notification via SMS text or email, whichever they’d prefer.
  • Turn off your lights, give your thermostat a breather, or even flip that circuit breaker for maximum earnings!
  • Get paid. You’ll receive an email within a few days of the #OhmHour to let you know if you were successful in beating your forecast and if so, points will be added to your account. Those points can be cashed out via Paypal.
