## Why it's important to recycle mercury thermostats!

Mercury thermostats are no longer in production, however many still remain in buildings that have not yet updated to smarter and more environmentally conscious HVAC systems. When buildings do make the move to update, this leaves residents with the task of recycling their previous thermostats. Mercury is toxic and hazardous to human health, and improper disposal can expose sanitation workers, soil, and groundwater to toxic contamination. Below is a guide on how to decipher what type of thermostat you have, and how to properly recycle it. 

  

First you will need to identify if your thermostat is mercury or digital. A mercury thermostat will typically have a dial that controls the temperature, while a digital thermostat will have buttons. If you are unsure, remove the thermostat’s cover and check if you see a bulb, or vial that contains a silver, metallic liquid. If you see the latter, that is mercury!

2\.    Enclose your thermostat in a sealable bag and seal tightly.
