# How Solar Works With OhmConnect > Everything You Need to Know About How Solar Works With OhmConnect Solar and OhmConnect OhmConnect members that have solar have a slightly different experien Source: https://ohmconnect.kustomer.help/help/how-solar-works-with-ohmconnect-SyhBswpYF Last updated: 2023-05-18T21:06:26.472Z ## Everything You Need to Know About How Solar Works With OhmConnect! ### Solar and OhmConnect OhmConnect members that have solar have a slightly different experience with their energy-saving events, than non solar members. The good news is that with solar on your property, you can still earn rewards for reducing energy. OhmConnect has thousands of members who have solar and are benefitting from our program! The biggest impact you'll find is that solar impacts your reduction percentage for the events, which will ultimately affect your status. This is mainly due to the fact that energy is being produced onsite. In fact, it's even possible for your system to be producing more energy than you're using. So, if you leave your solar system on during an event while reducing energy in other ways, you're in a good position to be rewarded for saving energy. ### Potential Watts When OhmConnect receives data from your home, it is a combination of the solar energy you generate and the energy you use. We are sent one number, which includes solar production, but not the individual amounts for energy consumption and solar production. As a result, the amount of energy you save for each OhmHour event is actually a combination of the total energy you generate, less the energy you use for that given timeframe. As such, this may not be representative of your average energy savings. For example, if during an hour your solar system generates 1 kWh and you use 2 kWh, your usage data will read 1 kWh, when in fact your actual usage was 2 kWh. As a result, if your Potential Watts are below an average of 2000 (i.e. 2 kWh) we assume your actual usage is more like 2 kWh.  All solar members have the same Potential Watts listed at the beginning of every event. For OhmHours, this amount will always be 2000+ Watts and for AutoOhm events it will be 500+ Watts. Given that the amount of solar generation is unknown, it is impossible to have an exact cap on how much energy you can reduce and therefore how many Watts you could potentially earn.  ### Potential Watts Calculation  As a solar member, the Watts you earn are calculated by subtracting your usage during your event from your actual historical usage, which is your average usage over the past 10 relevant days (10 days if the event is on a weekday, past four relevant days if the event is on a weekend). You can find your Events page by clicking [here.](https://app.ohmconnect.com/events) ### Status Calculation  The 2 kWh, or 2000 Watts, placeholder you see as your Potential Watts also comes into play when calculating your percentage reduction. The way we calculate this is by subtracting your actual usage during your event from your average historical net usage for that event. We then divide that number by the number of hours we asked you to reduce, and multiply by 2, which represents the 2 kWh placeholder that we have in place for all solar members. ### Shared Mission OhmConnect and solar members have something in common. We share the goal of reducing stress on the energy grid, and overall creating cleaner, and more reliable energy. More technically speaking, we are similarly both compensated by the grid for this commitment to reductions. As such, the energy grid cannot both compensate solar members individually, and as well if they are additionally a member with OhmConnect. If the grid is compensating your household through reductions on your energy bill each month or alternatively through a True-Up at the end of the year (depending on the plan you have), then the compensation for those reductions would be doubled up if they were to pay us for your reductions as well. However, we value our shared goal to the extent that we reward our members out of pocket for their reductions. ### Frequently Asked Questions ### Why are my percentage reductions off? I reduced more than I'm seeing.  As potential Watts are calculated differently for solar members, this impacts your status as well. If you read through the previous mentioned calculations and still feel that your reductions are skewed, please click the chat icon in the lower right corner of this article and we'd be happy to discuss.  ### How Can I Use Less Energy if my Potential Watts are Negative? The negative daily usage you are seeing reflects your solar panels sending energy back to the grid. We receive one net number for your usage, which combines your solar panel generation and your energy usage. When your solar panels send more energy back to the grid than you use, it will be represented in a negative number. This honestly shows that you have a highly effective solar system! Our best suggestion is to reduce as much as possible during the time frame of your events and you should see this reflected in your solar panels sending more energy back to the grid. ### OhmHours often happen when I'm not producing energy. Why are they still being calculated the same as events when I am producing energy?  We are aware that when the sun is down, you will not have solar production. Once a member is classified as solar, all of their events are calculated under the solar parameters, regardless of the timing of their OhmHour. Each home is unique, and as well each solar system will vary from home to home. For example, one home could have west facing panels and produce energy until the sun goes down, whereas a home with east facing panels, may only produce for a short window of the day. As such, we do not have exact insight into how much your solar panels are generating, and therefor categorize all of your events as a solar member.
