Some of the most common issues can be fixed with a simple restart.

  • Restarting your Nest Thermostat maintains all your settings, similar to restarting a computer, phone, or tablet.
  • It's a useful step if your thermostat is stuck or frozen, has trouble connecting to the internet, or is not working normally.

Option 1: How to restart your Nest Thermostat

  1. Press the thermostat ring to bring up the Quick View menu.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Reset.
  4. Choose Restart.
  5. Turn the ring to confirm and press OK to restart your thermostat.

If your thermostat is not responsive or frozen, you can do the following 2 steps to manually restart it.

  1. Press your thermostat ring toward the wall and hold it down until the screen turns off (about 10 seconds). Then let go of the ring.
  2. Press and release the ring to turn it back on and complete the restart process. You’ll see the Nest logo when it begins to start up. The screen will turn on as it finishes.

If you're still having issues, you may need to reset all settings and restore the Nest Thermostat to factory default settings.

  • 🚨 Note: Following theses steps erases all of your thermostat’s information (schedules, WiFi, etc).
  • After resetting to defaults, you’ll need to set it up again like you did when you first installed the device.

Option 2: How to factory reset your Nest thermostat

  1. Press the thermostat ring to bring up the Quick View menu.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Reset.
  4. Choose All Settings.
  5. You will be asked to confirm that you want to erase all settings and return to factory defaults. Choose Reset.
  6. Turn the ring to confirm and press OK to factory reset your thermostat.

Option 3: How to reset your Nest Thermostat network settings (and reconnect to a new/changed WiFi)

  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Reset.
  4. Choose Network.
  5. Select Reset to confirm.
