We’ve been heads down building new ways for you to earn, and we're excited to introduce something new. Say hi to AutoOhms, a new way to earn cash without lifting a finger.
Over the next month, we'll be rolling this new, shorter energy event out to all users who have at least one eligible smart device connected to their account.
Read on to learn more!
How do AutoOhms work?
With AutoOhms, your smart devices (which you already have connected!) automatically power down in real-time, and you earn a flat rate for each device that turns off.
AutoOhms are a simpler way to get rewarded: once you connect devices, they do all the work for you. No running around your house; no goals to beat. Just sit back as your devices power down, and watch as the cash rolls in!
During an AutoOhm, your smart thermostats and any devices and appliances that are connected to smart plugs will power down automatically. You’ll earn a flat rate for every 15 minutes each appliance is off -- which means the more plugs and thermostats you have connected, the more you make!
At a glance, here's everything you need to know about AutoOhms:
- Shorter events. AutoOhms happen in real-time and come in 15-minute increments. They won’t last longer than 45 minutes.
- Your devices do the work. No running around your house. Just sit back, relax, and watch the cash roll in!
- Consistent cash. Earn a flat rate for each 15 minutes your devices that turn off. The more devices you connect, the more you earn! Just remember: you’ll only get rewarded if it turns off.
- Simpler, with no penalties. No negative points to fear, no streaks to worry about, no status to maintain. Just flat rewards for every smart device you have connected.
- Instant rewards. After an AutoOhm, you’ll be rewarded instantly. For now, you’ll see the cash you earn as points on your main OhmConnect dashboard. Cash out as you normally do.
- Fewer notifications. Since your devices do all the work for you, alerts for AutoOhms are OFF by default. If you want to change that, head over to your settings.
- New look. The AutoOhm experience looks different than what you’re used to seeing for #OhmHours. Feedback welcome!
What does the new experience look like?
We've decided to build the AutoOhm experience separately from the regular OhmConnect dashboard. This is to help you feel that you're earning in the background. For #OhmHours, we ask you to dig deep and power down everything you can in order to beat your goal and earn points. That's not the case for AutoOhms! For AutoOhms we want you to let your home save energy for you -- that way you get to sit back and watch the cash roll in!
You'll notice that the AutoOhm experience looks different than what you’re used to seeing for #OhmHours. Feedback welcome!
Here's a peek at the new AutoOhm dashboard:
When do AutoOhms happen? How long do they last?
AutoOhms happen in real-time anytime, and come in 15-minute increments. They won't last longer than 45 minutes.
How do I get rewarded?
Earn a flat rate for each 15 minutes your devices that turn off. The more devices you connect, the more you earn! Just remember: you’ll only get rewarded if it turns off.
After an AutoOhm, you’ll be rewarded instantly. For now, you’ll see the cash you earn as points on your main OhmConnect dashboard. Cash out as you normally do through Paypal or for a giftcard.
How do alerts/notifications work?
Since your devices do all the work for you, alerts for AutoOhms are OFF by default. You can always turn alerts on in your settings if you would like to get notified every time an AutoOhm is happening. Just remember: you don't need to do anything -- it's all up to your devices!
Who has access to AutoOhms?
We'll be making AutoOhms available to all users that match the following criteria:
- Live in California, and
- Have connected their utility account (e.g. are Silver or above), and
- Have at least one eligible smart device connected to their account
We will be rolling them out slowly over the next month, so if you haven't been invited yet and want to get in on the fun early, drop us a line!
Can I opt just some devices out of AutoOHms?
Yes! Have your home office desk connected to a smart plug and don't want it to turn off during AutoOhms? No problem! If you don't want a specific smart device to respond to AutoOhms, you can opt it out.
Tap on a device in the list on your AutoOhm dashboard and uncheck where it says "Earn During AutoOhms".
Can I opt out of AutoOhms entirely?
Yes. If you don't want to participate in AutoOhms at all, you can opt out of the program completely through your AutoOhm settings. You'll be removed from AutoOhms and will only earn in #OhmHours going forward.
If you later decide you want to opt back in, let us know!
What devices are eligible for AutoOhms?
At the moment, the following devices are eligible for AutoOhms, at these rewards tiers. Devices use or manage different amounts of energy, hence the difference in rewards! Note that for your device to be rewarded in an AutoOhm, it must turn off.
If you have other types/brands of smart devices connected to your OhmConnect account, you will see them listed but they will not participate in AutoOhms, nor will you earn cash for them (even if they normally work in #OhmHours).
We know there are more kinds of smart devices out there and we hope to support them all in AutoOhms soon! Check back here for the most up-to-date list, or drop us a line if there's something you have connected and want to be rewarded for. We’ll do our best.
Where can I see AutoOhms?
If you have access to AutoOhms already, you can visit your new AutoOhm experience here! You can also see AutoOhms in the menu of the regular OhmConnect dashboard.
If you don't have eligible smart devices connected, you won't be able to access the AutoOhm experience...yet!
How can I add more devices to my OhmConnect account?
For now, you can continue to add or manage your devices on your Devices Page in the regular OhmConnect product.
How are AutoOhms different from #OhmHours?
Both AutoOhms and #OhmHours are ways for you to get paid for saving energy.
#OhmHours happen when the grid predicts an energy surge in the next 24 hours. AutoOhms happen when the grid is experiencing a surge in energy right now. For this reason, they’re set up a little differently.
Take a look at the table below for an outline:
Do AutoOhms count toward my status or streak? Will I get negative points?
Nope! AutoOhms do NOT impact your streak or your status. You'll also never get negative points for an AutoOhms.
With AutoOhms it's all upside: if your devices turn off during the AutoOhm, you earn cash -- a flat reward for every device that turns off. If your devices don't turn off, you won't earn -- but you also don't lose. It's all a win for you.
Do I have to worry about my energy goal or forecast?
Nope again! For AutoOhms, we're not interested in your forecast or a goal of kWhs that you need to beat. You'll just get rewarded a flat rate for every 15 minutes your smart devices turn off.
I have feedback!
We really want to hear how things are going as we roll this new product out. As always, we'll ask for feedback along the way, but if you want to get in touch, just reach out!
